Travel Photography – Egypt – Valley of the Queens and The Colossi of Memnon

The Valley of the Queens is close the Valley of the Kings and is another large necropolis where many Egyptian Queens and princes were buried, the most famous of which is the tomb of Nefertari, the principle consort to the Pharaoh Rameses II although this is closed to the Public. In much the same way of the Valley of the Kings the decoration inside the tombs is amazing and the colours are still vivid.

In much the same way as in the Valley of the Kings the use of cameras or video cameras in the tombs is prohibited, however outside of the tombs the use of video is allowed along with still cameras, I just kept mine in my bag when inside, much easier. Outside I took a few shots of the area.

On the way back from the Valleys of the Kings and Queens we stopped to look at the Colossi of Memnon, the twin statues that used to flank the entrance of the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III.  The statues are 60ft high and impressive, although much of the detail above waste height has been lost, and the Statue to the East was rebuilt following an earthquake in the Roman era.

I took a few shots from various angles and these seem to be the best, including one HDR shot, and one that shows amazing detail of part of the inscriptions on the Eastern Colossus, the version I have posted is good, but the original size is far more impressive.  Click on the shots to show larger size. And for more of my Egypt photos have on a look on Flickr.
