Moving to Moscow – The Basics

Well, as I said in my first post I am moving to Moscow with my wife, the reason isn’t some kind of collective madness we are both suffering from, but more due to her Job, she is some high powered businesswoman for a large Market Research Agency.

Planning for the move started late last year when we started Russian lessons with a nice Ukranian woman called Vladyslava who has persevered with us despite our complete lack of time for private study.  We are getting some of the basics of the language, but so far understanding it when spoken, and remembering exactly how you say things is proving difficult, strangely the alphabet is not posing too many problems.

It does seem like we are packing our whole life away, we are living with boxes, preparing the house for renting out by painting and renovating.  Arranging storage has proved to be relatively straight forward, and it is local too which is a good thing, just need to arrange shipping for the limited amount of things we can take with us.

There just seems such a lot to do, luckily my wife is a tiny bit obsessed with lists and I like anything Techy that helps me get stuff done so we are using a list on checkvist.com which has everything on there we need to do.  What it doesn’t mention that out of the few weekends we have left in the UK two of them are taken up by visiting family and some friends for various birthdays……So even less time to do things before we go!

The other thing that this move has prompted is a clearing out of oold things we no longer need, a massive spring clean, which to me is good for the soul.

So what am I going to do whilst out in Moscow?  Good question, answers on a postcard, or comment on the blog! So far I have a list of possibilities:-

  • Get a job – not practical until I can speak Russian a lot better
  • Further Study – Looking into various options for doing an MBA by distance learning, so far it looks like we might be able to afford it.
  • Photography – I love doing this, and there will be lots to shoot out there, but can I turn this into a career?
  • New technical skills – Maybe some web stuff? Help would be needed for this though.

That is about it from me for now, more to come about Moscow soon.

PS – I know the picture at the top of the blog isn’t Moscow, but I will update this as soon as I get chance to take some good shots over there.

Good luck…the photography should be amazing…you should read some Russian novelists…

I intend to, now where to find out about decent contemporary Russian novelists though – ideas?

  3. Toni says:

well you can also teach english while doing photography and learning the language ;) that would be hitting 3 birds in one time.

  4. Phil says:

That isn’t a bad plan, and in fact the photography and learning the language I will definately do from the start.
