No-one could accuse me of not preparing for the move to Moscow, I have research, and researched, and researched. I have talked to family, friends, people on Expat forums (notably www.expat.ru), and now comes Twitter.
I have been using Twitter for 2 or 3 months now after resisting for about a year through ignorance of how it could possibly be useful or compelling. Taking the Moscow move as an example, I talked about it maybe once or twice, a day or so later a number of people had contacted me offering assistance. This was great, it wasn’t unsolicited advice as often comes in person when you mention it, not having to know the right questions or the right places to ask as often happens on forums, but just the offer of help and advice on anything related to the move. I have found, and continue to find this refreshing. This isn’t a blog post eulogising twitter, or claiming it is the best thing since sliced bread, just that it was an unexpected ‘use’ of twitter I hadn’t anticipated nor sought.
So all this has helped me/us to prepare for the move to Moscow, but not to the extent that I believe we have all bases covered. This leads to small moments of anxiety about whether we are going to ready to move by the given date (which by the way is not fixed yet), and this anxiety leads to inaction which kind of makes things worse!
I think that when we have been over to pick out an apartment, got a date fixed for the permanent move, and have arranged to rent our house out in order for this anxiety to dissipate.
The other obvious problem is the language, and have had to miss another lesson today due to ‘bad’ snow, not sure how we will be able to pick it all up as quickly as people say we should…..This remains to be seen, but I am treating it as a challenge rather than an obstacle!
